Most modeling agencies have a height requirement of 5’9”. A few agencies, especially smaller local agencies, may consider models that are 5’6” and taller.  A model should have a uniqueness and sparkle that is portrayed onto print.  Not all models can do this.  This quality is what makes the model that becomes the next supermodel.  The model should have no tan lines, beautiful clear skin, hair that is well manicured and healthy, beautiful straight teeth, and a toned, well proportioned body.

Here are a few other things models have to have:

AMBITION: A model reaches for her/his dreams and goals.  You have to be willing to make sacrifices in your life, such as missing hanging out with your friends, going to parties, being away from home, etc.  If you're sitting at home waiting on an agent to call you, dream on for sure!

INTELLIGENCE: You must have a business head, intelligent in money matters such as investments, spending, and handling money wisely.  The model must know how to conduct business with agents, photographers, and clients.

CONFIDENCE: Clients want someone that is self-assured, someone they know can sell their product.  A model has to sell herself/himself to the client.  A biggie is handling REJECTION, which a model will face almost every day in her/his career.  The model will not meet every client's expectations.

INDEPENDENCE:  The model must know the importance of the word independence.  Sometimes the model will have to travel and could be gone weeks or months from family and friends for a “Job”, or even have to move to the area where the agency is located.

ORGANIZATION:  A model must be organized.  An important piece of equipment is a date journal, palm, calendar, etc.  There will be days when the model might have several go-sees in different directions that all have appointed times.  You cannot afford to be late!

STAMINA:  A model may be on her/his feet all day long.  Sometimes she/he will be asked to hold a pose for quite sometime so the photographer can capture numerous images.  Sometimes the model will be in something that is too small, but she/he cannot act like it is uncomfortable.  That is another reason for the model to be in shape, healthy, eat properly, be able to work all day, and still look good 14 hours later.

If you decide to go into modeling, you have to realize your expectations and be realistic.  The modeling market changes constantly in the wants and needs of the clients, and modeling agencies are always adapting their requirements to meet the clients needs.  Modeling will take a lot of time, energy, and effort.  The model will need to believe in herself/himself … and remember, if at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.  You could submit to an agency now and be rejected, but submit to the same agency 3 months later, and they will want to sign you immediately.

Good luck to all those who decide to make their career in the modeling world.

Believe, dream, and reach for your goals!
